I JUST ORDERED A SERGER!

Well, I never really understood what a serger is/does! So....not able to sleep, I got up to research and read reviews, and ended up buying this one from Amazon!

Highly rated, especially for someone who will use it for light use, I'm excited to begin experimenting with it. And of course, I have a project idea in mind.

Necessity is the mother of invention - or so they say! Needing a diversion and distraction from some heavy-duty stuff in my life, I launched into a new design - not knitting, not felting, not crocheting, but fiber in any event.  Actually it's textiles/fabrics and it makes use of recycled materials that I've been collecting for a while anyway and using in various forms for various purposes and projects (buttons, earrings, rag bags, etc.)  This new idea fits perfectly with my creative philosophy and muse.

So yesterday I made a variation on the No Name Funky Scarf.  Actually I made three of them, but the best and the most interesting is one made from an existing scarf (it was part of a dress found at Goodwill).  In fact I wore it last night and determined from the many remarks and compliments that it's a winner.  In addition, the photos I posted on FB got immediate attention!  THREE lovely ladies want to buy it!

So....the serger?  Well, I have a collection of silk and synthetic scarves from my own trove, my parents, and now from friends. I went through the frenzy of making many buttons, earrings, and rag and rug bags, and then moved onto other creative endeavors.  But now I'd like to use these scarves as the base for one of the new designs.  I'm not going to reveal HOW I'll use these, but I do need a serger.  My own trusty sewing machine is a Necchi from 1968!  It serves me well, but it can't do what a serger can.

Two of the Funky Fabric scarves made yesterday consisted of black fabric (something like ultra suede) recycled from trousers - also from Goodwill!  They are great looking, but the one constructed of all chiffony material is supple, flowy, and heavenly light!  THAT's why I need the serger: to finish the edges of cut up scarves!  And that's all I'll say about that - no point giving it all away up front!

You are going to have fun with this! I have even seen yarn made on a serger. It was a few years back on Etsy, and the seller's blog complained that it was hard on the serger, but she was running all sorts of stuff through it, that were never meant to be serged.

Good luck! I have one though I haven't used it much yet. Really looking forward to seeing what you do with it!
