Iris Simmons - Honored Quilt Artist from Wilmington NC

Anyone who lives in the Wilmington NC area and reads the Star News has been greeted this morning with a wonderful treat! On the front page of the Play section, in full color, are photos and a beautiful article about Iris Simmons, another of the Port City Pottery artists. Iris was selected to create a quilt which she entitled "e pluribus unum," and she was one of 44 quilt artists selected to exhibit in "Quilts for Obama: An Exhibit Celebrating the Inauguration of our 44th President."

We at Port City Pottery & Fine Crafts are so proud of Iris and her accomplishments. Her quilt will be on display at the Historical Society of Washington, D.C. from January 11 - 31. YOU can see others of Iris' works at Port City Pottery & Fine Crafts, located in historical downtown Wilmington in the Cotton Exchange. See the article entitled: Stitch in Time" in the Star News and online. Please read yet another article about Iris in the Wilmington Journal.

Iris' Artist Statement

My quilting journey started about nine years ago. I've always had a passion for fabric. I love the different textures of woven materials. I enjoy incorporating all kinds of materials in my works, not just fabric. I have been most influenced by modern/abstract art and free-form design. I try to design pieces that have a strong visual impact. Most of my works reflect bold use of color and "unusual materials."
