PLAYING IN CLAY!!!

Fat Cat Pottery was the setting today for a playdate with clay for me and several of the other artists and owners of Port City Pottery & Fine Crafts. A fabulous idea was conceived and facilitated by the owners who then coached, encouraged, and assisted us non-potters in creating ornaments to be given to customers of Port City Pottery & Fine Crafts. WHAT FUN!!!!

Mary Delivers the Clay!
It looks like chocolate, but we were admonished NOT to eat it!

Iris and Debbie chatting it up!

I had never worked in clay before - except I suppose when I was a kid and made snakes and the requisite ashtray (UGH!!! what a terrible idea for young, impressionable school-age kids!) in art class. So, despite the fact that my husband is a potter, I had never really given it a try (because I HATE to get dirt under my nails!). This wasn't exactly skillful or creative pottery......rather it was production of very cute slabs of clay (I flunked, so Mary graciously rolled out slabs for me!) on which we stamped various sayings and inspirationals, cute flowers and other whimsical flourishes.

Our goal over three Fridays is 1000 of these ornaments as giveaway / marketing pieces. We hope to encourage our customers to enjoy the gift, hang it on their holiday tree or elsewhere, remember us, and come back to shop at the Cotton Exchange and most specifically at Port City Pottery & Fine Crafts - where the work of 20 artists is sold in an artists' cooperative: pottery, fiber arts, woodworking, mixed media, gourd art, jewelry, and much more.

These are some photos of us working today!

Louise - Thanks for telling everyone what fun we had today playing in clay! It is a far stretch from my gourd & pine needle art but I thoroughly enjoyed it! See you Sunday!
